Welcome to Rooted Academy
A space for kids to explore through movement, play, and challenge.

As former public educators, we have a very good idea of what it would look like to send our 5-year-old to a traditional kindergarten classroom this year.
Having a deep understand of our children and of our values as a family, and experiencing the personalities of hundreds of kids over the years, we've decided that homeschool is where our son will THRIVE at this point in his life.

That being said, we've never done this homeschool thing before.

We HAVE assessed the needs and skills of children. Over and over again. So that's the experience and curiosity we're using to re-shape Rooted Academy:

What does our 5-year-old son NEED to thrive this fall?
1. Physical activity outside in the sun.
Kids are bursting with natural energy and need opportunities to express that energy that won't get them into trouble.
For our son, being outside, on the ground gives him the space to be creative yet focused and rooted in our natural world. (we have a feeling he's not alone in this)
We also try to follow our human circadian rhythm as closely as possible, which means playing in the sun! It's amazing for our sleep and our overall human-ness.

2. The space to interact with focused activities and objectives using his unique skills and abilities.
We absolutely love free play. Being at home almost all day every day, our kids get plenty of free play. But we also see the benefits of giving our kids a "job," or a project, or a task.
Their brains work a little bit differently in this setting and it's another opportunity kids get to show us who they are. When we give kiddos space to focus on an objective instead of the "right way" to complete an objective, they build confidence in their own unique gifts and capacities.
3. An opportunity to collaborate with others.
To us, homeschool is not about isolation, but about intention.

We want to be intentional about providing our children the opportunity to collaborate with others, especially in a mixed age group setting.

Which brings us to Rooted Academy! We want to offer these things that we are providing our son in his homeschool journey to our community. Our goal is to provide an interactive, outdoor, collaborative space that families can count on.

What others say about our coaches:

T.M., Former Colleague
Scout's teaching style encouraged active participation, critical thinking, and intellectual curiosity among students. In addition to being highly knowledgeable, Scout has an innate ability to connect with students on both academic and personal levels, which allows him to create a supportive and motivating classroom environment.

M.P., Former Student
Ms. Hartman's [Emily's] class taught me beyond the books; I learned confidence, perseverance, and compassion. Aside from the fact that she was a great teacher, her energy and dedication to teaching and connecting with her students exuded all the qualities of a role model. Her classroom was always a place of peace, and I can only hope for my daughter to have a teacher as inspiring and supportive as Ms. Hartman when she's ready for school.

M.M., Former Colleague
Mr.Gibson [Scout] is a person of strong character—honest, hardworking, and always willing to go the extra mile to support colleagues and students alike. He is highly respected by both peers and students for his leadership, work ethic, and empathy.

C.C., Former Colleague
One of Emily’s greatest strengths was her ability to teach our department how to reinforce critical thinking skills across grade levels. Her guidance empowered us to challenge our students to think more deeply and critically, which had a profound impact on their academic growth. Emily’s nurturing approach ensured that every student felt valued and understood, and her commitment to their success went beyond the classroom walls.
